Archbishop Robert J. Carlson invited clergy to preach about racism during Masses the first Sunday in Lent.

His request was "in response to the many challenges we have had since Ferguson (following a police shooting), and again this past summer and fall in the St. Louis area" following clashes between pacifists, protesters and white supremacists in Charlottesville,Va., and the not-guilty verdict in the trial of a former St. Louis police officer charged with first-degree murder in a shooting death in 2011.

Barbara Riley is a foster parent who has adopted six children. On a limited income, any help she receives is appreciated, especially for the foster children such as a 2-year-old she's caring for who's still in diapers.

Tommy Johnson has grandchildren living with him, including a 20-month-old who wears diapers. It's hard to stretch his income to cover the youngsters' needs, he said, noting that it isn't enough.

Faynita Mosley is a mother of four, including two little ones, works part time and struggles to make ends meet.

As the largest parish in the Archdiocese of St. Louis with more than 5,300 registered households, it's hard to imagine that St. Joseph in Cottleville doesn't have a preschool. Or a senior ministry. Or a space to hold pancake breakfasts after Mass.

Yet all of the above is true — but not for much longer.

Ben Norwine displayed pinpoint passing and quick defense in Duchesne High School's 49-36 win against St. Charles West on Feb. 16. Twice in the first half, he grabbed an opponent's errant pass, dashed down the court and bounced a quick pass to teammates for easy layups.

The Missouri Catholic Conference (MCC) is asking people to contact their U.S. senators and congressional representatives to pass the DREAM Act.

The DREAM Act is a proposal brought up in the past in Congress — the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act — which would provide a path to citizenship for people brought to the United States as minors without documentation.
