Holy Spirit soccer player Aiva Barry pushed past Our Lady of Lourdes’ Genevieve Wynne in the CYC semifinal match. Holy Spirit defeated Our Lady of Lourdes, but lost to Our Lady of Festus in the championship of the CYC girls midget closed division.

Fall sports — at the high school and grade school levels — are nearing completion, with high school and CYC soccer championships held this month.

The high school soccer championships occurred in St. Louis at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton. St. Louis Priory won the Class 2 Missouri State High School Activities Association championship with a 3-0 victory over Lincoln College Prep of Kansas City.

Andrae Goodnight portrays Father Augustus Tolton in the production

To hear Andrae Goodnight describe it, Father Augustus Tolton was a powerful and transformative figure in U.S. Catholic Church whose positive example remains relevant today.

Goodnight will play the role of Father Tolton — the first American diocesan priest of African descent — in a new one-man drama produced by Saint Luke Productions. Several performances will take place in St. Louis later this month.

Four Catholic school teachers were among 109 St. Louis-area educators who received Emerson Excellence in Teaching Awards in a ceremony Nov. 12 at the Ritz-Carlton in Clayton.

Selected by the Catholic Education Office, the archdiocese's 2017 Emerson class consists of: Laurie Clarkson of Sacred Heart (Troy); Katherine Compton of St. Rose of Lima (DeSoto); Karen Pollmann of St. Gerard Majella (Kirkwood); and Becky Struckel of Assumption (Mattese).

A former banquet hall will become a new space for the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, a home for the community's novitiate and a place to promote intergenerational and intercultural living.

The sisters, based in San Antonio, purchased the 5,600-square-foot building in the Tower Grove South neighborhood of south St. Louis earlier this spring. Sisters Cathy Vetter and Helena Monahan, along with a novice, Miriam Bannon, will be the first residents. The house is undergoing renovations and is expected to be completed by spring.

Sister Mary Antona Ebo, a Franciscan Sister of Mary whose courageous words during the March 10, 1965, march in Selma, Ala., became a rallying cry for many in the Civil Rights movement, died Nov. 11 at The Sarah Community in Bridgeton. She was 93 and was a Franciscan Sister of Mary for 71 years.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 20, at St. Alphonsus "Rock" Church, 1118 N. Grand Blvd. in north St. Louis. Visitation will take place at 9 a.m., preceding the Mass. Archbishop Robert J. Carlson will preside at the Mass.
